Introduction
These Terms of Use govern your use of the CanScan mobile application. By using CanScan, you agree to these terms.
Application Description
CanScan is a mobile application designed to help users identify Canadian products through barcode scanning, AI-powered image analysis, and community features. The app offers both free and premium features to support Canadian product discovery and purchasing decisions.
Acceptable Use
You agree to use CanScan only for lawful purposes and in accordance with these Terms. You agree not to:
- Use the app in any way that violates applicable laws or regulations
- Attempt to interfere with or disrupt the operation of the app
- Distribute, license, or sell any part of the app
- Modify, adapt, or hack the app or modify another website to falsely imply association with CanScan
- Use the app to collect or harvest any personally identifiable information
User Accounts
While CanScan offers limited functionality without an account, creating an account unlocks additional features including scan history, community participation, and Pro features. Users can sign up using email, Google, or Apple authentication.
Account Registration
When you create an account, you must provide a unique username, select your province, and verify your email address. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials and for all activities that occur under your account.
Account Security
You must notify us immediately of any unauthorized use of your account. We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms or engage in suspicious activity.
Account Termination
We reserve the right to suspend or permanently terminate your account at our sole discretion, with or without notice, for conduct that we believe violates these Terms, is harmful to other users, or is otherwise objectionable. Upon termination, your right to use the app will immediately cease. You may also delete your own account at any time through the app settings.
Subscriptions and Credits
CanScan offers Pro features through a credit-based system and optional premium subscriptions. Free users receive limited credits for Pro scans, while premium subscribers enjoy unlimited access to advanced features.
Credit System
Credits are consumed when using Pro features such as advanced barcode scanning, AI image analysis, and premium search. Credits do not expire but are tied to your device and account. Unused credits are non-transferable.
Refund Policy
All purchases are processed through app store providers (Apple App Store or Google Play Store). Refund requests must be submitted through your respective app store according to their policies. We do not directly handle refund processing.
Community Features
CanScan includes community features such as public chat where users can discuss Canadian products, share recommendations, and interact with other users. Participation requires an account and agreement to community guidelines.
Community Guidelines
Users must be respectful, avoid spam, refrain from posting inappropriate content, and not share false or misleading information. We reserve the right to remove content and suspend users who violate these guidelines.
User Generated Content
By posting content (messages, images, reviews), you grant CanScan a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to use, display, and distribute your content within the app. You retain ownership of your content but are responsible for ensuring you have the right to share it.
Content Moderation
We reserve the right to review, edit, or remove any user-generated content that violates our terms or community guidelines. We may use automated systems and AI to assist with content moderation.
AI and Machine Learning Services
CanScan uses Google Gemini AI and other machine learning services to analyze products, provide recommendations, and power chat features. AI-generated content is provided for informational purposes and may not always be accurate.
AI Accuracy Disclaimer
While we strive for accuracy, AI-generated analysis, product information, and recommendations may contain errors. Users should verify important information independently and not rely solely on AI-generated content for critical decisions.
Data Storage and Processing
User data, including profiles, scan history, and community interactions, are stored securely in cloud databases (Supabase). Product images and analysis results may be cached for performance. Data is processed in accordance with our Privacy Policy.
Data Retention
We retain user data for as long as your account is active. You may request account deletion at any time, which will remove your personal data within 30 days, except where retention is required by law or for legitimate business purposes.
Age Requirements
You must be at least 13 years old to use CanScan. Users under 18 should have parental permission. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If we discover such data has been provided, we will promptly delete it.
Intellectual Property
App Content
All content included in CanScan, such as text, graphics, logos, and software, is the property of CanScan or its content suppliers and is protected by copyright and other laws.
Trademarks
CanScan and related logos are trademarks of CanScan. You may not use these trademarks without prior written permission.
Information Accuracy
Product Information
CanScan retrieves product information from Open Food Facts, custom search engines, and AI-powered analysis using Google Gemini. Product data may also include user-contributed images and information. While we strive for accuracy, we cannot guarantee that all information is complete or correct.
Canadian Product Detection
The app uses AI algorithms and a curated database of over 100,000 Canadian products to identify Canadian-made items. Detection accuracy depends on available data, AI analysis quality, and may include crowd-sourced information. Results are provided on a best-effort basis.
Health Canada Recalls
CanScan displays Health Canada product recall alerts when scanned products match active recalls. Recall data is sourced from official government databases and updated daily. Users should verify recall information independently through official Health Canada channels.
Location-Based Features
CanScan GO features require explicit opt-in for GPS tracking. When enabled, location data is stored with scans to power map visualization and location-based analytics. GPS tracking is only available for authenticated users and can be disabled at any time in Settings. Anonymous users never have location data collected.
Leaderboards and Public Activity
If you opt in to CanScan GO and leaderboard features, your username, province, scan statistics, and recent scan activity may be publicly visible to other users on leaderboards and the activity feed. You can control your visibility in Settings.
Avatar Upload and Moderation
You may upload a custom profile avatar. All avatars are automatically screened for inappropriate content. Avatars containing adult or violent imagery are automatically rejected. Upload frequency is limited to prevent abuse. Users may report avatars that violate community guidelines.

Liability
Disclaimer
CanScan is provided "as is" and "as available", without any warranties of any kind, either express or implied. We do not warrant that the app will be error-free or uninterrupted.
Limitation of Liability
In no event shall CanScan be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising out of or related to your use of the application.
Third-Party Services
External Services
CanScan integrates with multiple third-party services including Supabase (backend infrastructure), Google Gemini AI (product analysis), Perplexity AI (product search), Google Cloud Vision (content moderation), Google Maps (location services), RevenueCat (subscriptions), Open Food Facts (product database), Health Canada (recalls data), and Sentry (error tracking). Your use of these services is subject to their respective terms and privacy policies.

The app may contain links to external websites or services. We are not responsible for the content or practices of these sites.
Changes
App Updates
We may update the app from time to time to improve functionality, add features, or fix bugs. You are responsible for updating to the latest version.
Terms Updates
We may modify these Terms at any time. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes your acceptance of the revised Terms.
Governing Law
These Terms shall be governed by the laws of Canada, without regard to its conflict of law provisions.
Severability
If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable, the remaining provisions will remain in full force and effect.
Force Majeure
CanScan shall not be liable for any failure or delay in performing our obligations where such failure or delay results from circumstances beyond our reasonable control, including but not limited to: natural disasters, acts of government, internet or telecommunications failures, third-party service outages (including our cloud infrastructure, AI services, and data providers), power failures, or other events outside our control.
